Food, food, food, food...

Good grief. Have these past few weeks flown by for anyone else? I feel like we just started this whole thing, and we are really making some progress! So exciting! Good news: I've lost another 2 pounds! I have had people start making some comments about looking a little skinnier, which is such an encouragement. It's hard to notice myself because it's such a gradual change. Some pants are fitting a little looser though! Yay! Here's a stats update:

Total weight loss goal: 62 pounds
Weight loss this week: 2 pounds
Weight loss total: 14 pounds
Weight loss to go: 48 pounds

I watched a McDonald's commercial the other day and felt a small twinge of craving. Those quarter pounders with cheese and some salty fries are just fabulous. However, I'm finding out that there really are good tasting, healthy foods out there. I have found new loves in sushi, turkey or grilled chicken wraps, and grilled or steamed seafood (Red Lobster's steamed crab legs anyone?!?). I have also discovered healthy snacks that help my salty tooth and my sweet tooth. I am LOVING sea salted roasted almonds! Life changing... Pimento stuffed green olives are another favorite. As for my sweet tooth, Amy and I are discovering more and more weightwatchers cakes:
-Chocolate cake mix and a can of Diet Coke
-Lemon cake mix and a can of Diet Mountain Dew
-Red velvet cake mix with a can of Diet Dr. Pepper (my favorite!)
Just mix then together and bake! You can also frost them with a container of fat free whipped cream. We're loving exploring all of the options!

Praise the Lord for progress!

It's a GREAT Friday!

Good news all around:

First and foremost - I'VE LOST 10 LBS TOTAL!!!! I am so freaking stoked. Secondly, I get to see some of my very best friends this weekend! Thirdly, Miss OBU is this weekend!

HOW AMAZING IS TODAY?!?!

So here is my update:
Weight loss goal: 50 lbs
Weight lost so far: 10 lbs
Weight left to lose: 40 lbs

10 lbs in one month is great progress, I think!! It averages about 2 5 lbs per week. I would say that's a pretty healthy weight.

Here's even MORE good news:
You don't have to kill yourself at the gym or starve yourself to lose weight. Kate and I have been spending 30 minutes a day, 5 days of the week working out. Honestly, I walk a mile and use some of the machines. My thinking is, I'm not in any rush to lose this weight. I don't have to lose 60 lbs in a summer. I'm not setting any time limits. And I think that might be the best way. Changing your diet is a complete life style change. If you can make yourself start healthier habits, you WILL lose weight. I promise!

Just remember to start small. Don't completely change your diet in one week. Don't go from eating cheeseburgers to dry lettuce. Your body will hate you. Just slowly start making healthier choices and sooner or later you will get into the habit of eating better. So next time at the drive thru, don't order the cheeseburger. Maybe order the grilled chicken sandwich w/o the mayo. Instead of getting french fries, get a side salad. It's the little things that make a big difference.

Thank you all so much for your encouragement!! This weight loss is going to motivate me, but it's really you guys that keep us going!!

Peace & love,
A

I'm still here!

I know- I've been a very bad blogger lately!
I have a new enemy: Teacher Appreciation Week. Monday through Thursday last week these fantastic ladies brought all kinds of goodies to the teachers' lounge. One could not enter that room without taking a bit of the heavenly goodness! I worked very, very hard to "graze not gorge." I still should not have eaten half of what I did- not to mention, Grandma made me biscuits with chocolate gravy this morning (my weakness). So, as you can tell, food is the struggle. When I get out of my routine, I have to be extra careful with what kinds of foods I put in my body. Workouts, however, have been my strong point. I managed to wake up at 4:50 am every single day last week and do around thirty minutes of exercise. I walk 3/4 of a mile on an incline and jog 1/4 of a mile flat. I do ab workouts daily and then alternate legs and arms every other day. This week, I'm going to up the jogging: 1/2 mile walking on an incline and 1/2 mile jogging flat.

Sunday has come and gone, but I weighed this afternoon and was incredibly surprised to see that I had still lost 2 pounds in spite of my feelings of failure! For those of you keeping up:

Total weight loss goal: 62 pounds
Weight lost this week: 2 pounds
Weight loss total: 12 pounds
Weight loss to go: 50 pounds

Now that I know my weakness, I know that this is where my prayer needs to be focused: Self control. I would appreciate your prayers on this. Thank you so much for giving us such strong accountability by being involved in this with us. Just knowing that people are looking at this blog keeps us going!

For His glory,
K

17 short days

Well everybody.. it's officially been two weeks (and two days) since I've started this new change. I told myself in the beginning that when two weeks hit and I hadn't "cheated" on my diet, that I would reward myself with a day of shopping. When I started, I thought "two weeks is going to take forever." Well the two week mark hit and I didn't even realize it til two days later! That's a great thing. & I just so happen to be going to El Dorado this weekend to go shopping with my sister! So I WILL be rewarding myself this weekend. Can't decide if I'm going to reward myself with clothes or food yet... to be determined.

Surprisingly, I've been enjoying all of this. I'm all about projects. I'm always looking for some new project to start on. And this is my project. And if you don't know me, when I come up with a project or idea, I take it and run with it. I'm fully committed to that project. So I think I've gone about this in the right way.

Weight Watchers has made this journey so much easier. There are so many resources it provides you with. It's the easiest diet to go on. Obviously, I highly recommend it.

Pleeeaaasseeee continue to pray for Kate and me. This week has been one of the hardest weeks to get my bum out of bed and go work out. I need more motivation and more energy.

Peace & love,
A

good morning!

Well good morning everyone!!

Kate and I started up our 5 a.m. work outs this morning. I think this morning was the hardest morning so far to actually get up and out of bed. I had a pretty hectic weekend, so I was exhausted. But I pushed through, got up and we worked out.

I officially signed up for Weight Watchers this morning. I found that counting calories was exhausting and Weight Watchers is so user-friendly. I'm hoping this will work out better than the calorie thing. There's more to work with when doing Weight Watchers. There are lots of recipes to use.

Pleeease pray for me this week. There will be lots going on. So pray that I can keep focused on my plan.

Peace & love,
A

hollerrr

Good news! I've lost 5 lbs!! WOOP WOOP!! I'm stoked. Some of you might think 5 lbs isn't a big deal. But it's 5 lbs closer to my weight goal!

Weight loss goal: 50 lbs
Weight lost so far: 5 lbs
Weight left to lose: 45 lbs

This is going to motivate me to do even better this coming week!

These past couple of days has been a true test to my plan. With snow days, eating out and not having time to work out, I've been struggling a little bit. But thankfully, I still chose options that were healthy. Maybe not the best choices for the beginning of my journey, but it could have been worse!

Tomorrow we'll be back to our 5:00 a.m. workouts. Please continue to pray for us as it's probably not going to get any easier this week.

Peace & love,
A

Weigh day #2!

Okay so here's the deal. My wonderfully perceptive boyfriend noticed a glitch in my bathroom scale yesterday. With no weight on it, the scale shows 4 pounds. So, with his help, the scale has been fixed and I have lost four pounds with no effort at all! In addition to the 4 "lost" pounds, I lost an additional 2 pounds on my own. So, if we're being technical, I lost 6 pounds this week, but actually only lost two pounds off my body. That being said, here's the stats for the week:

Total weight loss goal: 62 pounds
Weight lost so far: 10 pounds (including the broken scale weight loss)
Weight loss to go: 52 pounds

Keep up the prayers!

For His glory,
K

Snow days...

As far as weight loss goes, snow days are the enemy! You're sitting in your house with nothing to do, so you want to eat. So far, I have done pretty well- trying to snack on my roasted almonds or fruit when I get the munchies. Workouts haven't happened because it's just too cold outside for me to even walk to the workout room. I've done a few cardio things in the apartment, but nothing really active enough to be considered a workout.

So I've promised some recipes...
1) Quick and easy crustless apple pie. My sweet friend Kaycee told me about this one. You cut up an apple and mix it with cinnamon and Splenda and microwave it for a little bit. Satisfies the sweet tooth without that guilty "I just ate dessert" feeling.
2) This is one of my new absolute favorites. Buy some chocolate cake mix (doesn't matter what kind, I like anything devil's food) and pour a 12 fl oz can of diet coke in with the cake mix. Bake at 350 and frost it with a container of fat free cool whip. Amy found this recipe and it will change your life. It's healthier because you aren't loading it up with vegetable oil and heavy frosting. Try it- it tastes NOTHING like a cake you would eat on a diet! You can also do it with white cake mix and diet sprite (we haven't tried that one yet)- and Amy wants to try lemon cake mix with diet mountain dew...Yum!

I'm learning that eating healthy does not mean you have to be deprived of good tasting food for the rest of your life. I am growing more obsessed with grilled or baked fish (salmon, tilapia, grouper). Add some lemon pepper seasoning to it and some steamed vegetables you have an amazing and nutritious meal!

Keep up the prayers! Next post for me will probably be weight day #2 on Sunday! :-)

K

apologies for the delay

Well it sure has been a while since the last time I've posted!! Life has been busy!

First off, I'd like to thank all of you for all of the encouragement we've been getting! Seeing you all comment and sending us texts really motivates us to do even better!

YAY for Kate losing 4 pounds!! That is awesome. So far I haven't lost any, but I'm still working hard! Since life has been so crazy, my work outs haven't been as consistent! But I'm really hoping after this week is over with the snow and everything, I can get back to my routine.

Just wanted to let you all know that I haven't disappeared or given up! Just been a busy couple of days. Continue to be praying for us. It's getting harder, for me anyway. My cravings are starting to kick in and it's taking someone physically telling me "NO" so I won't eat certain things. Sad, I know. But it's the truth. And the whole point to this thing is to be honest with ourselves and with each other.

Thanks again!
Peace and love,
A

It's weigh day!

Forgot to mention this, every Sunday morning, I will get up and weigh myself to see my progress each week. So, today is Sunday aaannnddd...
I've lost 4 pounds!

Four pounds is a little too much to lose per week (my goal was 2-3 pounds per week), so I have adjusted my daily points limit to keep myself losing weight in a healthy way. It's definitely a guess and check kind of thing, but I do want to make sure that I'm not losing too much too fast! So, to those of you who are keeping track:
Weight loss goal: 62 pounds
This week's weight loss: 4 pounds
New weight loss goal: 58 pounds

It's such an encouragement to know that I'm making progress! I know this coming week will be where it starts to get tougher, so keep up the encouragement and prayers!

For His glory,
K

PS) Amy and I will be posting recipes soon!!!

Let's get physical (Yes I did just make an Olivia Newton-John reference)

The Workout:
Vigorous walking for a mile. I'm trying to work my way up to jogging, so I jogged a little. Just gradually building my endurance! 60 crunches, 60 side-to-side crunches, and 10 burning crunches (that's not an official name, I just made it up. Ha...You pull into the crunch and hold it for ten seconds). Then, 20 forward lunges and 20 backward lunges. Which brings me to my next point:
lun/ges: Latin- legamus noodleyas; The maker of the noodle legs; the giver of the constant dead leg feeling; totally ballin' exercise
I am going to figure out some sort of schedule for focusing on specific muscles areas (legs, arms, abs). I'm thinking I might do abs every day, because ab workouts are fun and I love them. If any of you have any suggestions, leave a comment!

Coming soon: Food for thought... Email us or facebook message us some of your favorite healthy snacks, we'll try as many as we can, and we'll post our faves on the blog! Email: kateandamyblog@gmail.com

The response to this has been overwhelming! The more people that read this blog, the more we get motivated. Thanks for being there for us!

day two....EARLY morning

Good morning everyone! It was definitely a little bit harder to wake up this morning. But once again, we were up and att'em this morning! Just got done working out not too long ago.. I walked a mile on the treadmill and did some rotations on the machines Having oatmeal and grapes with orange juice this morning for breakfast.

So far, I've been staying under my calories. I think I've decided instead of having a strict diet, I'm just going to watch what I eat and count my calories. But I'm not going to be beating myself up over the calories. I've definitely been staying under 1400 calories a day. But if I go over, I'm not going to beat myself up over it.

I've already learned that if you set yourself up for failure, you're going to fail. Meaning, if you beat yourself up over not getting your diet exactly right, you're just going to make yourself feel bad and in my world, that would mean me finding the greasiest piece of food and eating it.. saying "well what's the use? I can't do this anyway." And THAT my friends, is Satan. Telling us that we aren't good enough. Telling us that we can't actually do this or keep all of this up. It sure is a good thing that our God TRUMPS Satan!! and through our God, ANYTHING is possible! Man, I get chills just saying that!

Continue to pray for us. Continue to pray that we won't let Satan get the best of us. We truly appreciate ALL of you!

Peace & love,
A

day one coming to an end

I realize this is my third blog post of the day and that I'm starting to look slightly obsessive. But I warned you in the beginning. So just learn to bear with me :)

You all know what I had for breakfast (oatmeal and orange juice). Here's what I had the rest of the day:
Lunch - Lean Cuisine Chicken Fettucine, spinach salad with fat-free italian dressing, and mandarin oranges
Snacks - 100 calorie pack Cheez-It Party mix and a granola bar with dark chocolate on it
Dinner - [my favorite meal for today]

scrambled eggs with turkey sausage, spinach and string mozzarella cheese with grapes on the side

Praying that tomorrow morning will be just as easy to wake up as it was this morning! Thanks again for all of the support and encouragement! We really do appreciate it.

Peace & love,
A

Day 1: Success!

Based on the first day picture, I'd say the diet is going pretty well, wouldn't you?

All kidding aside, Amy covered the early morning. I've realized that bedtime probably needs to be moved up to 6:30 pm for me to get the amount of rest I need. Just kidding. But seriously, 4:50 am is just.... WOW.... early.

So, as with all normal adult coversations, I am going to tell what I ate today:
Morning: 1 large banana cut in half longways with cinnamon sugar sprinkled on top (thanks to momma Barbi for that brilliant idea- lifechanging). I also drank a coffee- not great, but there are worse things.
Afternoon: vegetable soup, 1 dinner roll, salad with italian dressing, and 2 chocolate chip cookies provided by our reading specialist at school today. Yes, the cookies are a no-no, but I checked weightwatchers to make sure it wouldn't mess me up, and it checked out good! I also drank a Special K protein shake (chocolate) and I must say it was great. It curbed hunger and also gave me a little something to appeal to my sweet tooth.
Evening: I plan to eat one of my SmartOnes 5 point meals- Cheese ravioli anyone?

All of this added up to be 5 points over my daily points total. However, there is also a weekly bank of 49 flex points that can be applied to times when I go over. Weight loss jargon interpretation? Day 1 was a success.

*One major note: I have stopped drinking carbonated beverages for the time being. I'm not religiously opposed to it. I just despise acne and those silly sodas seem to trigger it.

Thanks to all our sweet friends who are commenting and texting us throughout the day. Your encouragement means so much! It is also such a blessing to know that this is motivating others to get healthy too! Keep it up!

For His glory,
K

my Everest.....for today anyway

I'm sorry if I'm getting a little "blog post happy," but I wanted to share this with you all.

This ladies and gentleman is a chocolate cake with homemade chocolate icing. And this ladies and gentleman is my Everest. For today anyway.

I will walk by this about 20-30 times today. Pray for my will power today!

Peace & love,
Amy

early morning

Well good morning friends! Kate and I started our morning at 5:00 with a work out. We walked over [in the freeeeezing cold] to our apartment's work out room. I am so thankful we have that. I think it's going to be a great help! It's definitely cheaper & more convenient than joining a gym! We worked out for a good 30 minutes or so.. [baby steps] I did three miles on the bike, a half a mile on the treadmill (would have done more but the second treadmill wasn't working right), and some rotations on the ab machine.

Honestly, I'm just impressed that I got myself out of bed this morning. 4:45 came SUPER early. But it was worth it. Now I have plenty of time to sit, eat breakfast (apple & cinnamon oatmeal and orange juice) and watch some Saved by the Bell.

Well, the first (and second) day is usually the easiest... so continue to pray that we can keep this up! Because the third day, tomorrow, will be hard. Love you guys!

Peace & love,
Amy

and so it goes...

Well hello! Amy here. I'm on my first day of this new journey and it hasn't been that bad. Minus the fact that I've felt slightly queezy all day... but I think that's just because I'm tired and my roommate has had a little bug. This too shall pass.

So like Kate did, I'll give you all my stats so far:
Age: 22
Height: 5'1 [that's being kind of generous]
Weight: BAHA yeah right :)
Weight loss goal: 50 lbs (for now)
How: Eating healthier, watching calorie intake and probably a little bit of Weight Watchers and working out of course

Right now I'm taking it two weeks at a time. I've learned that if I can do anything for two weeks, I can make it work. So to get started, I'm not allowing myself to "cheat" at all until two weeks is up. Once I've hit that mark, I will reward myself with a day of shopping! :)

I hope you all will keep Kate and I in your prayers. This is going to be a somewhat hard journey for us. So please remember us while you are having your daily talks with the Lord!

Peace & love,
Amy

Let it begin...KATE

Okay, so here it goes. Kate's first post on this shiny new blog designed by the overwhelmingly talented Amy. Where to start? First of all, I want everyone to know that this isn't because my self-confidence is at an all-time low. It's not. I'm actually more confident than I ever have been in my entire life. This is about being healthy and yeah, it wouldn't hurt to have a knockout bikini body this summer.
So, friends, let the accountability begin. Here's my stats:

Age: 22
Height: 5'7"
Weight: I'm not telling just yet.. ha
Weight loss goal: 62 pounds (yes that's alot, but that isn't taking me down to anorexic looking- promise)
How: Weightwatchers diet and exercise (walking or jogging)

And of course, we cannot succeed without incentives, so if I can lose 15 pounds in the next 6 weeks, I am buying myself an iPhone 4 (yeah baby).

In future posts, I'll be letting you know some specific things we're doing to be healthier with our eating and exercise. We'll try to both post separately and together and maybe even post pictures at some points along the way! Prayers and encouragement are welcome! Hope you enjoy our journey!

For His glory,
K
